What are DPC points in Dota 2?

I recently became interested in the professional Dota 2 scene and came across the concept of DPC points. I find it difficult to understand how they work and what role they play in qualifying for international tournaments. I would like to figure out how teams earn them and how important they are for the overall ranking.
